Nestled within a stucco-fronted Victorian terrace dating from circa 1837, this first-floor flat lies in the heart of the Maida Vale Conservation Area. Over the years, successive refurbishments had eroded much of the property’s original character. Our intervention sought to recover the spirit of the Victorian fabric while reimagining the interior through a contemporary lens — merging refined craftsmanship, material integrity, and spatial clarity.

The brief called for a complete interior redesign and the reconfiguration of the layout from one to two bedrooms.

The conceptual starting point was the client’s treasured 1919 Poltrona Frau armchair in racing green — a defining piece that became the chromatic and emotional anchor of the scheme.

Green, in dialogue with rich brown tones, threads through the spaces to establish a natural, grounded atmosphere. In the semi–open-plan kitchen, a composition of natural stones — Verde Tinos, Emperador Dark, and Bardiglio Grey — defines the geometry of the floor and surfaces. The same palette continues across the cabinetry, floating shelves, and countertops, where shades of green reappear in nuanced tones and finishes.

Matte walnut is used for the American walnut countertop set against the large Victorian window, and again in the bespoke living room bookcase — finished in high-gloss lacquer with concealed LED lighting. Floor thresholds in Emperador Dark stone subtly frame transitions between rooms, reinforcing a sense of crafted precision.

The fireplace, conceived as a strong, masculine statement, is articulated in stepped Emperador Dark stone, framing the reinstated Victorian cast-iron insert — a dialogue between old and new, mass and detail.

Bespoke furniture design forms part of the wider architectural narrative. Two coffee tables — designed specifically for the project — combine inclined hexagonal edges in Emperador Dark marble with Blue Deep marble tops and rosewood feet. Sculptural in character, they can be displayed as a pair or stand independently as individual statements.

Custom curved cast-iron curtain rails in the living space support long Egyptian silk drapes in a soft cream coconut tone, harmonising with the timber side panels of the traditional Victorian windows. These open onto an exterior balcony, offering views of the ornate cast-iron balustrade and neighbouring Victorian façades. In the bedrooms, curtain poles are crafted in wood — a softer, more traditional gesture — with floral finials in gilded peony for the master room and pink rose for the secondary bedroom.

The bathroom contrasts the living areas with a softer, more tactile palette. Travertine and Carrara marble create a serene interplay of tones and textures, complemented by a large circular mirror and finely detailed wall mouldings. White high-gloss Flauti porcelain tiles animate the shower enclosure with their three-dimensional modulation of light.

Throughout, Italian-engineered timber flooring in a subtle grey tone (190mm wide planks) unifies the flat. Wall panelling has been reinterpreted in a contemporary language — full-height mouldings paired with fine inner frames — reinstating a sense of proportion and refinement befitting the building’s Victorian origins.

The ceilings have been entirely reworked, reinstating lost Victorian coving and integrating new lighting in subtle, strategic locations. Flos fittings illuminate the floating shelves, while the iconic Abajourd - Hui lamps punctuate key moments, offering gentle highlights with minimal visual impact.
